Tumwater committee endorses additional work for riverbank stabilization at Pioneer Park

Tumwater, WALocal News

The Tumwater Public Works Committee endorsed additional work on a stabilization project for the Deschutes River adjacent to Pioneer Park. The committee approved an amended contract with Stantec Consulting Services, authorizing a tree study and biological assessment for environmental permitting. This initiative aims to enhance salmon habitat by reducing fine sediment loading by 46% and increasing shade cover by more than 50%. The contract's increase of over $48,000 raises its total value to $442,401. Grant Gilmore, a water resources specialist, noted that the tree survey is necessary due to updates in the city’s tree code.

The biological assessment will evaluate potential effects on 27 animal species within the project area. Staff anticipate submitting permit applications soon, with implementation possibly beginning by late summer 2026. The second phase, which involves in-water stabilization features, may extend until 2027 due to a lengthier permitting process.
