Manatee County seeks input from hurricane victims on how to spend 252M in federal disaster relief funds
Manatee County officials are gathering community feedback on the allocation of $252 million in federal disaster relief funds following extensive damage from Tropical Storm Debby and Hurricanes Helene and Milton. This funding, received from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, aims to address pressing recovery needs, including home repairs and property buyouts in vulnerable areas. Michele Davis, the grant administration division manager, highlighted the ongoing struggles of residents still recovering from the storms. A meeting will take place on May 13 at the Central Library in Bradenton, allowing residents to voice their unmet needs and suggestions for rebuilding. Odugo Ohizu, the communications coordinator, pointed out that many individuals still seek significant assistance after exhausting available funding sources.
The ‘Lasting Manatee’ initiative aims to strengthen infrastructure and support recovery efforts, with programs expected to launch by late winter. This initiative is one of the final efforts to help the community heal from the damage caused by recent hurricanes. Engaging the community is critical to ensuring that the funds are utilized effectively to meet the diverse needs of those affected.
