TGH helping new moms through new mental health program 'There is a stigma'
Tampa General Hospital has initiated a mental health program designed to support mothers during pregnancy, delivery, and the post-partum phase. The CDC reports that 80% of pregnancy-related deaths are preventable, with mental health issues identified as a leading factor. Alarmingly, only 30 to 50% of mothers undergo screening for postpartum mental health, and many avoid seeking treatment due to stigma and a shortage of trained providers. Dr. Lacy Chavis, TGH Psychology Services Manager, noted the urgent need for individualized care to validate mothers' experiences and support their mental health.
The program includes a comprehensive screening process and tailored treatment options to address the unique challenges mothers face. In conjunction with this initiative, the #TGHmovement4MOMS aims to connect local mothers dealing with mental health issues, fostering community support. This program addresses a critical gap in mental health care, particularly in Florida, where resources are limited. Community involvement is crucial for the success and sustainability of this initiative, which seeks to normalize conversations around maternal mental health.
