Fire destroys Clearwater treatment center, causing over 1 million in damages CFR

Tampa Bay, FLLocal News

A significant fire erupted at the Fairwinds Treatment Center in Clearwater, Florida, leading to the evacuation of 17 residents and five employees early Sunday morning. Clearwater Fire Rescue indicated that the blaze likely started in the kitchen and was reported around 5 a. m. Fire crews faced intense conditions, battling flames that shot into the attic and ultimately caused a partial roof collapse. Over 20 agencies participated in the firefighting efforts, which lasted approximately two hours, resulting in damages estimated at over $1 million.

Investigators have preliminarily ruled the fire as accidental, potentially linked to an electrical issue with an industrial freezer. Division Chief David Kadau noted that the middle section of the building is now a total loss. The treatment center, which serves individuals in addiction recovery, is currently unable to accommodate its residents, although the property manager is working to find alternative arrangements. As some residents were nearing discharge, immediate plans are being put in place to ensure their continued care.
