New Port Richey's new fire station to help with firefighter safety

Tampa Bay, FLLocal News

New Port Richey is on the verge of opening a new fire station that aims to significantly enhance firefighter safety and operational capabilities. This facility will be double the size of the previous station, built in 1974, and is designed with the health and well-being of emergency responders at its core. Fire Chief Chris Fitch highlighted that the department averages 17 calls per shift, which underscores the necessity for improved infrastructure. The new station will incorporate advanced features, including a decontamination area and specialized ventilation systems to mitigate exposure to harmful substances. Additionally, the structure is designed to be resilient against Category 5 hurricanes, ensuring that firefighters can respond promptly even after severe weather events.

The total project cost is approximately $4. 5 million, with the land donated to the city for public use. Chief Fitch envisions the station as a symbol of safety, education, and community pride. Scheduled to open in April, this new fire station will not only enhance service delivery but also foster a safer working environment for firefighters.
