Program to lift Treasure Island homes hits new city commission

Tampa Bay, FLLocal News

Treasure Island is on the brink of a significant policy shift with the proposed Terrain Modification Program, designed to combat the challenges posed by sea level rise. This program permits voluntary fill use for elevating homes and businesses, a departure from the city's longstanding no-fill policy. City officials emphasize that without immediate action, the island's infrastructure will face severe challenges as tidal elevations increase. Newly sworn-in commissioners, including Chris Clark, are urging a postponement of the discussion to thoroughly review over 500 pages of related documents. Clark expressed his support for the concept of fill but raised concerns about the potential costs and implications for local businesses.

The program aims to not only elevate private properties but also facilitate future modifications to city roads, enhancing overall resilience. The city’s website warns that failing to act now could lead to daily impassable roadways, fundamentally altering island life. The public is invited to participate in the discussion during the city meeting scheduled for 6 p. m. at City Hall.
