Another Way to Replenish Tampas Tree Canopy

Tampa Bay, FLLocal News

The City of Tampa is taking proactive steps to replenish its tree canopy through the newly launched “Plant Your Heart Out” initiative, a collaboration with Suncoast Credit Union and Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful. Following the devastating impact of back-to-back hurricanes, the program is backed by an initial $50,000 donation from Suncoast Credit Union, underscoring their commitment to community health and environmental sustainability. Mayor Jane Castor expressed her gratitude for this partnership, recognizing its importance in enhancing the quality of life in Tampa. The initiative encourages residents to plant trees on private properties, focusing on resilient species that can withstand salt and wind damage. Urban foresters estimate that recent storms have destroyed about 5% of Tampa's shade canopy, which has fallen to its lowest level since 1973.

The program not only aims to restore the canopy but also to improve air quality, soil retention, and biodiversity. Residents interested in participating can connect with local neighborhood associations to assess interest and receive guidance on planting. This effort marks a significant step toward fostering a healthier, more sustainable urban environment in Tampa.
