Pepperjack's Running Program, Parks and Recreation Get Kids Ready To Run

Tampa Bay, FLLocal News

The City of Tampa's Parks and Recreation Department has once again teamed up with Pepperjack's Kids Running Program to foster fitness, discipline, and nutrition among local youth. Since the program's launch in 2015, it has successfully engaged over 2,000 children, with approximately 250 young runners currently training to complete the last two miles of the Gasparilla half marathon on February 23. Each participant, ranging from 3rd to 8th grade, is provided with running essentials, including shoes, socks, and a backpack, courtesy of the Gasparilla Distance Classic Association. Mayor Jane Castor highlighted the significance of physical activity for children, acknowledging the barriers they face in maintaining an active lifestyle. This year, the program has added a nutrition component, with clinical dietitian Nicole Misner from the University of South Florida helping children make informed dietary choices.

Runners train weekly, engaging in various activities designed to improve endurance and speed, while also having fun. The program aims to create a lasting positive impact on the participants' lives. Sign-ups for the 2026 Pepperjack Running Program are scheduled for September and October 2025, with all children required to possess a Parks and Recreation rec card.
