City of Tampa Solid Waste Celebrates One Year Anniversary of Giving Yard Waste Second Life Through Mulching

Tampa Bay, FLLocal News

The City of Tampa's Solid Waste and Environmental Program Management Department proudly celebrates the successful completion of its first year of the Yard Waste Program, having composted over 20 million pounds of yard waste. This collaborative effort with Veransa Group has not only diverted significant waste from landfills but also created nutrient-rich compost and mulch for regional distribution. The initiative is crucial for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and optimizing energy production at the McKay Bay Waste-to-Energy plant. Additionally, the program supports water conservation efforts by improving soil moisture retention during the dry seasons. A community compost giveaway last summer allowed 150 residents to benefit, with another giveaway scheduled for April 25 and 26, encouraging further community involvement.

Mayor Jane Castor highlights the program's alignment with the Climate Action and Equity Plan, urging residents to participate actively. Guidelines for yard waste disposal include using reusable containers, biodegradable bags, or bundles, emphasizing the importance of responsible waste management. For further information on the Yard Waste Collection Program, residents can access resources at the City of Tampa's website.
