Cedar Key expects significant storm surge from Helene as residents evacuate

Tampa Bay, FLLocal News

Cedar Key, Florida, is on high alert as Hurricane Helene approaches, with forecasts predicting a storm surge of 10-15 feet. This has led to a mandatory evacuation order for the area, prompting residents and business owners to take immediate action to protect their properties. Hannah Healey, the owner of The Prickly Palm coffee shop, is among those preparing for the worst; she has removed everything from her business, recalling the damage caused by both Hurricane Idalia and Hurricane Debby in the past year. Healey expressed her fears that Helene could bring even more devastation than previous storms, stating, "My gut says it’ll be worse than (Hurricane) Idalia. " The community has experienced significant flooding from both storms, with Idalia sending over four feet of water into her shop.

As the storm approaches, local authorities are urging residents to heed evacuation orders and stay safe. The situation remains fluid, with residents anxiously awaiting updates as Hurricane Helene draws near. Cedar Key's resilience will be tested once again as it faces the potential impacts of this hurricane.
