Hurricane Watch issued for Florida Gulf Coast as Tropical Storm Helene expected to strengthen

Tampa Bay, FLLocal News

A Hurricane Watch has been issued for the Gulf Coast of Florida, particularly from Englewood to Indian Pass, including Tampa Bay, as a tropical storm is anticipated to develop in the Western Caribbean. Meteorologist Kyle Hanson indicates that the storm is expected to strengthen into a major hurricane by Thursday, with significant impacts likely across the region. A Flood Watch has been issued, forecasting 3 to 6 inches of rain, with localized higher amounts possible depending on the storm's track. Several counties in Central Florida, including Sumter, Lake, Orange, Seminole, and Osceola, are under a Tropical Storm Watch. The storm, likely to be named Helene, is expected to bring threats of storm surge and damaging winds, with power outages being a possibility.

The National Weather Service warns that even if the storm remains offshore, heavy rain and strong wind squalls could still affect the area. Residents are encouraged to prepare for severe weather conditions as the storm's exact path remains uncertain. Emergency management officials are advising locals to stay informed and ready as the situation develops.
