Hillsborough County Schools seeks to reassure parents after threats

Tampa Bay, FLLocal News

Hillsborough County Schools is taking proactive steps to reassure parents following recent school shooting threats. The district's Chief of Security, John Newman, emphasized the importance of the Centegix crisis alert system, which has been in place for five years. This system allows any staff member to request immediate assistance by pressing a button embedded in their identification badges. Newman explained that he has become familiar with the various alert sounds, enabling him to assess situations quickly. He noted that many alerts are routine, such as staff requests for help, but he remains vigilant for more serious threats.

The district's commitment to school safety is underscored by its efforts to maintain open lines of communication with parents, ensuring they are informed about the measures in place. This approach not only enhances security but also fosters trust within the community. As the district navigates these challenges, its focus remains on providing a safe learning environment for all students.
