St. Petersburg City Council awards $550,000 in local arts grants

Tampa Bay, FLLocal News

The St. Petersburg City Council has taken a significant step to bolster the local arts community by awarding $550,000 in grants for fiscal year 2025. This unanimous decision followed careful consideration by the Arts Advisory Committee, which sifted through 38 applications, ultimately approving 37 for funding. Lisset Hanewicz, a council member, praised the committee's dedication, noting their valuable contributions to the arts in the community. The grants are especially meaningful in light of the recent veto of state arts funding by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, which has left local organizations in a precarious position.

Erica Sutherlin, the committee chair, highlighted the necessity of operational support, asserting that without it, arts programs cannot flourish. The approval of grants also indicates a growing interest in the arts, with four new organizations applying this year. The city’s proactive approach reinforces its commitment to fostering a vibrant cultural environment. As St. Petersburg continues to invest in the arts, this funding will play a vital role in sustaining and enhancing its creative landscape.
