New College of Florida offers course in ‘Woke’ movement

Tampa Bay, FLLocal News

New College of Florida is preparing to launch a course on the 'Woke' movement in January 2025, marking a notable curriculum change amid ongoing debates surrounding social justice and educational content. The course description describes the movement as "a kind of cult," critiquing its methods as "essentially illiberal" and highlighting the potential for dehumanizing behavior among its adherents. This development follows a significant overhaul of the school’s leadership by Governor Ron DeSantis, who has actively sought to reshape the institution's direction towards conservatism. The course will be led by Andrew Doyle, known for his satirical persona Titania McGrath, and will include readings from influential conservative figures like Christopher Rufo and Vivek Ramaswamy. In contrast, students will also engage with texts from scholars such as Ibram X.

Kendi and Robin DiAngelo, who are prominent in critical race theory discourse. Doyle has openly criticized what he perceives as a censorial brand of social justice activism, offering a personal narrative of the backlash he has faced for his views. The introduction of this class highlights the intensified scrutiny on diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in Florida's educational landscape. This course could significantly impact the college's student body and its approach to contentious social issues.
