Cross-Bay Ferry lands $4.9 million U.S. grant

Tampa Bay, FLLocal News

The Cross-Bay Ferry has successfully secured a $4. 9 million grant from the U. S. Department of Transportation, which aims to enhance ferry services between Tampa and St. Petersburg.

The funding will be utilized by the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority to purchase a new 350-passenger boat, a crucial upgrade from the currently leased vessels. U. S. Rep. Kathy Castor expressed that this grant will significantly lower operational costs while expanding service options for commuters.

Hillsborough Commissioner Pat Kemp praised the grant as a substantial "down payment on permanent service," highlighting its potential to improve local transit options. The initiative is also expected to reduce traffic congestion in the region, create local jobs, and support small businesses. By increasing connectivity, this ferry service could transform transportation dynamics in the Tampa Bay area. The project reflects a growing commitment to enhancing public transportation infrastructure. This grant could serve as a model for future investments in similar transit initiatives across the country.
