Deputies arrest dozens in looting, unlicensed contracting operations on Pinellas barrier islands

Tampa Bay, FLLocal News

In an extensive crackdown on crime, Pinellas County deputies have arrested dozens of individuals connected to looting and unlicensed contracting operations after hurricanes Helene and Milton devastated the region. Sheriff Bob Gualtieri stated that the severe storm damage has attracted an unprecedented number of criminals, preying on the vulnerable residents of the barrier islands. Between October 2 and the report, deputies apprehended 45 individuals facing serious charges, including armed robbery, burglary, and trespassing. Many of those arrested were not local residents, often traveling in vehicles with out-of-state license plates, which raised suspicions among law enforcement. Gualtieri highlighted the unique challenge posed by this influx of bad actors, stating, “We’ve never seen anything of this magnitude before.

” The article underscores the crucial role of law enforcement in protecting displaced residents during their recovery from the storms. Alongside the arrests, deputies also interacted with nearly 200 suspicious individuals, advising them to leave when probable cause for arrest was not established. This ongoing effort aims to ensure the safety and security of those most affected by the recent natural disasters.
