St. Petersburg police investigating after boy, 1, found dead in car at day care center

Tampa Bay, FLLocal News

St. Petersburg police are conducting an investigation following the death of a 1-year-old boy who was left in his father's car outside a day care center. The incident occurred on Wednesday when officers were called around 5:15 p. m. to the Kindercare Bayfront Child Development Center.

According to police spokesperson Yolanda Fernandez, the boy's father had taken him to an appointment earlier that day but forgot to drop him off at the day care and returned home instead. Later, while attempting to pick up his child, the father realized he had not dropped the boy off and rushed out to the car, where he found the child unresponsive. Authorities are awaiting an autopsy to determine the cause of death and whether any criminal charges will be applicable. The police have not released the father's name due to the absence of charges at this time. This tragic event has raised concerns about child safety and the responsibilities of parents and guardians.

The community is left in shock as they await further details from the investigation.
