A 32-year-old physical education teacher, identified as Akeen Barthol, left a loaded handgun unsecured in his backpack within a gym storage room that students could access. A 13-year-old student found the backpack and took it to a restroom, where personal items were removed, leaving the gun behind. Another student, upon discovering the backpack, promptly alerted school staff, who took immediate action by notifying the School Resource Officer. Chief Lee Bercaw remarked on the gravity of finding a gun on school property, expressing relief that no tragedy occurred and praising the responsible actions of the student who reported the weapon.

Barthol was arrested and now faces charges for possession of a weapon on school grounds and allowing a minor to possess a firearm. The incident raises critical questions about gun safety and access in educational environments, underscoring the importance of preventive measures.
