Research Before You Repair

Tampa Bay, FLLocal News

As Tampa residents begin the recovery process from recent storms, the City is actively reminding them to research before hiring contractors to avoid fraud and price gouging. The city noted that during a declared State of Emergency, price increases on essential commodities should not occur, and significant price disparities may indicate gouging. Homeowners are advised to obtain at least three estimates and ensure contractors are licensed, insured, and bonded to mitigate risks. The City is taking steps to alleviate the financial burden by waiving fees for specific permits related to storm damage, including roof repairs and HVAC changes. Residents can report suspected price gouging to the Attorney General’s Price Gouging Hotline for further action.

To facilitate the permitting process, the city offers virtual appointments through Q-Up Tampa. This initiative aims to safeguard the community and ensure that residents receive fair treatment during the recovery phase. The city emphasizes the importance of informed decision-making in selecting contractors to ensure quality repairs.
