Man arrested again for diesel theft, used modified car to steal from underground tanks: HCSO

Tampa Bay, FLLocal News

A man identified as Jesus Alvarez-Moreno was apprehended in Tampa, Florida, for stealing diesel fuel while already out on bond for a previous theft, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. Deputies responded to a report of a vehicle with a stolen Florida tag and discovered a strong diesel odor emanating from Alvarez-Moreno's car. Their investigation revealed that the vehicle had been modified to siphon diesel from underground tanks, equipped with a 300-gallon container and two 55-gallon drums. Two of these drums were confirmed to contain stolen fuel. Alvarez-Moreno now faces several charges, including unlawful conveyance of fuel and operating an unregistered motor vehicle.

Sheriff Chad Chronister remarked on the negative impact of such crimes on local businesses, noting that the suspect would have continued stealing if not for the deputies' swift action. The case underscores a broader issue of fuel theft in the region, which has been increasingly concerning for law enforcement and community members alike. The investigation remains active as authorities work to address this ongoing problem.
