Lakeland considering more red-light cameras

Tampa Bay, FLLocal News

In response to a surge in traffic and safety concerns, Lakeland city officials are contemplating the installation of additional red-light cameras. Currently, the city has 19 operational cameras, with the most recent one placed at the intersection of George Jenkins Boulevard and Kathleen Road. Assistant Chief Hans Lehman of the Traffic Division has pointed out that this intersection has experienced multiple severe angle crashes, including one involving a police officer. The presence of red-light cameras has reportedly led to a reduction in such incidents. A recent compilation of video footage showcases alarming near-misses and violations, underscoring the urgent need for more enforcement.

Between July 1, 2023, and June 30, 2024, Lakeland issued over 26,000 notices of red-light violations, further emphasizing the issue. City officials are committed to addressing these safety concerns as the population continues to grow. This proactive discussion around red-light cameras illustrates Lakeland’s approach to ensuring safer roadways for its residents.
