Debris Collection Focuses on Speed and Efficiency

Tampa Bay, FLLocal News

In the wake of hurricanes Helene and Milton, the City of Tampa is mobilizing significant resources to manage an estimated 1 million cubic yards of storm debris. The Solid Waste Department has ramped up its efforts by increasing payment rates to hire more haulers and expand its operational capacity. Currently, an average of 3,750 cubic yards of debris is being collected daily, equivalent to the size of 18 football fields. The city has developed a comprehensive map to keep residents updated on the progress of debris collection in various neighborhoods. Mayor Jane Castor emphasizes the importance of community patience as the city strives to complete the cleanup within a 90-day timeframe.

The Solid Waste Department is also facing challenges such as regional competition for hauling services. Residents seeking quicker removal of debris can utilize the McKay Bay Transfer Station at no charge. This proactive approach exemplifies Tampa's commitment to restoring neighborhoods affected by the storms while managing logistical challenges effectively.
