TODAY: Tampa Honors Legacy of Dr. Walter L. Smith with Street Renaming

On September 17, 2024, the City of Tampa will hold a street renaming ceremony to honor the late Dr. Walter L. Smith, a prominent figure in education and a former president of Florida A&M University. The event is scheduled for 10 a. m.

on N. Albany Avenue, where a portion will be renamed after Dr. Smith. Born in Tampa in 1935, Dr. Smith's journey from humble beginnings to educational leadership serves as an inspiration to many.

During his presidency at FAMU from 1977 to 1985, he oversaw significant advancements in academic programs and infrastructure, including the construction of Bragg Memorial Stadium. His commitment to education extended beyond his presidency, as seen in his establishment of the Dr. Walter L. Smith Library in 2002. City Councilman Luis Viera will host the ceremony, which will bring together city officials, community members, and Dr.

Smith's family. This event aims to celebrate the profound impact Dr. Smith had on education and his enduring legacy within the Tampa community. By honoring local leaders, the city reinforces its commitment to recognizing those who have shaped its history and future.
