Newsome High in Lithia dismissed on time after reported threat investigated by deputies

Tampa Bay, FLLocal News

Newsome High School in Lithia experienced a lockdown on September 13, 2024, following a reported threat that prompted a thorough investigation by approximately 200 deputies. Sheriff Chad Chronister announced that students would be dismissed on time despite the lockdown, with those who drove being released at 2:50 p. m. and others at 3:25 p. m.

Parent Juan Garay voiced his concerns, stating that the situation created significant stress and anxiety for both students and parents, particularly for his freshman son who was locked inside. Superintendent Van Ayres highlighted the alarming number of 181 false threats received by the district since a deadly school shooting in Georgia on September 4, suggesting a possible trend of copycat threats. The sheriff's office confirmed that no firearm was located during their investigation. Parents were advised against picking up their children directly from the school, instead directing them to a nearby shopping area. The situation remains under investigation, with authorities working to ascertain the threat's credibility.
