Bradenton's last call for alcohol could soon happen earlier

Tampa Bay, FLLocal News

Bradenton officials are considering a new ordinance to change the last call for alcohol from 2:30 a. m. to 2 a. m. due to escalating violence in the downtown area after bars close.

Recent incidents include fights and a shooting, prompting concerns over the safety of both the public and law enforcement. Captain Brian Thiers of the Bradenton Police Department noted that the violent gatherings have involved the entire police force. Police Chief Melanie Bevan highlighted that officers were often outnumbered during these events, raising significant safety concerns. Vice Mayor Marianne Barnebey argued that extending the hours for alcohol sales only invites more trouble, stating, "Why would we want to stay open until 2:30 to encourage people to come down here? " Other council members echoed her sentiments, advocating for an earlier last call to protect the community.

The move aims to enhance the safety of residents and visitors alike, demonstrating the city’s commitment to addressing public safety issues. As discussions continue, the Bradenton City Council is expected to weigh the implications of the proposed ordinance carefully.
