Minority Business Center forced to close
Tacoma's Minority Business Development Agency Business Center closed due to a "Notice of Grant Termination" from the U. S. Department of Commerce, creating uncertainty for future funding. Mayor Victoria Woodards expressed her dismay, noting the center's vital role in bolstering minority-owned businesses and the local economy. Tanja Carter, Director of the Community and Economic Development Department, highlighted operational instability within the national MBDA program as a key factor in the closure.
She emphasized that the decision was made to ensure a more secure and sustainable model for local support. Tacoma's partnerships with local organizations will continue to provide essential services to minority-owned businesses despite the program's end. The MBDA program has historically assisted in creating over 23,000 jobs and securing billions in contracts during President Biden’s administration. The city will closely monitor federal initiatives to support the community's entrepreneurs. Tacoma's commitment to inclusive economic growth remains strong as it adapts to changing circumstances.
