French Mayor of Biot visits Tacoma

Tacoma, WALocal News

Mayor Jean-Pierre Dermit of Biot, France, made a three-day visit to Tacoma, reaffirming the Sister City relationship established in 2012. During a Tacoma City Council meeting, Mayor Woodards proclaimed June 10 as Sister City Day, emphasizing the partnership strengthened through artist exchanges and civic visits. Dermit expressed heartfelt gratitude for the welcome he received, stating, "I love you Tacoma. " His visit included engaging with Mason Middle School students, who practiced their French with him and presented a handmade suncatcher. The exchange highlighted the importance of cultural connections, especially in light of current geopolitical tensions, as noted by Catherine Sarnat of the Tacoma Sister City’s Biot Committee.

Sarnat remarked on the contrast between the warm reception in Tacoma and the news reports from France. Teachers at Mason Middle School are considering librarian exchanges to further deepen educational ties. This visit illustrates the ongoing commitment to international cooperation and cultural appreciation between Tacoma and Biot.
