New animal codes in place
Tacoma City Council member John Hines championed new municipal code changes to enhance animal welfare in the city. The updates include defining "community cats," enforcing mandatory spay and neuter requirements for impounded animals, and banning the sale of companion animals for profit without a business license. Hines emphasized that these changes arose from discussions with local residents and the Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County. The updated regulations also clarify that households may keep only one indoor pig, addressing concerns from residents about livestock management. This initiative responds to a significant rise in animal population, as evidenced by a doubling of animal-related calls to the Tacoma FIRST 311 service since 2023.
The increased licensing fees aim to fund low-cost spay and neuter programs and Trap-Neuter-Return efforts. Hines expressed that the changes prioritize animal welfare and community support. The new regulations reflect a proactive approach to managing Tacoma's growing animal population while ensuring responsible pet ownership.
