Awards celebrate historic preservation
The Tacoma Landmarks Preservation Commission hosted the 2025 Historic Preservation Awards on May 22 at Urban Grace Church, celebrating local efforts to preserve Tacoma's unique heritage. Ferguson Architecture was awarded for Outstanding Achievement in Preservation as Neighborhood Revitalization for creating the Willie Stewart Academy, which supports students aged 17 to 21 in earning their diplomas. Andrea Haug and the South End Neighborhood Council received recognition for sustainability efforts in preserving Charlotte’s Blueberry Park. The Maritime Washington National Heritage Area was commended for its outreach and connection-building initiatives. Additional awards recognized projects like the Hilltop History Public Art Project and the Chinese Reconciliation Project Foundation, which honors Tacoma's multicultural past.
The event attracted a large audience, emphasizing community involvement in heritage preservation. This year also marked the introduction of a new award category, highlighting the growing emphasis on neighborhood revitalization. The ongoing commitment to historical preservation reflects Tacoma's dedication to maintaining its cultural identity.
