Grand opening for Patsy Surh Place

The grand opening of Patsy Surh Place, an affordable housing complex for seniors, occurred on May 21, 2025, in Tacoma’s Lincoln District, attracting a celebratory crowd. The six-story building provides 77 units, including 47 studios and 30 one-bedroom apartments, dedicated to seniors earning up to 50 percent of the Area Median Income. Key figures at the event included community leaders who highlighted the collaborative efforts of the Asia Pacific Cultural Center and the Low Income Housing Institute. Sharon Lee, Executive Director of LIHI, reported that 66 residents have already moved in, with a significant number previously homeless. The project secured vital funding from the State Housing Trust Fund, which received an unprecedented $750 million this year.

House Speaker Rep. Laurie Jinkins praised the initiative for enhancing the multicultural community’s strength. Mayor Woodards expressed excitement about participating in the opening as she approaches the end of her term. The project not only meets urgent housing demands but also promises to engage residents through cultural programs.
