County funds new traffic, streetlights

Tacoma, WALocal News

On May 6, the Pierce County Council approved Resolution No. R2025-141s, a significant measure to enhance safety in unincorporated neighborhoods. This resolution directs funding toward the 2025 Neighborhood Traffic and Street Lighting Program, focusing on pedestrian and driver safety. Councilmembers submitted project proposals, evaluated by engineers based on documented safety concerns and community support. Priority projects include traffic speed studies and the installation of streetlights in various districts, particularly near schools and parks.

The Pierce County Engineer will design and implement these projects using funds already allocated in the budget, with updates provided to the Council on progress. These safety investments are expected to significantly reduce accidents and promote walking and biking. Over the past two years, energy-efficient upgrades to 10 county facilities have resulted in over $38,000 in annual savings and $105,560 in rebates. The new lighting fixtures, lasting up to 25 years, will also lower maintenance costs.
