New community schoolyards open

Tacoma, WALocal News

Tacoma Public Schools and Parks Tacoma collaborated with the Trust for Public Land to open new schoolyards at Whitman and Mann Elementary, enhancing access to green spaces for local communities. The renovations address Tacoma's significant park access gap, which is the largest among Washington's major cities. Whitman’s playground boasts an updated outdoor classroom and natural elements that benefit over 400 students daily, while Mann’s yard now features safe play zones for 450 students and serves more than 3,000 residents within walking distance. Both schoolyards will be open to the public after school hours, promoting community use and outdoor recreation. Local voices contributed to the designs, ensuring the spaces meet community needs and reflect local culture.

Park Board President Andrea Smith emphasized the importance of these spaces in fostering community engagement and physical activity. The initiative is part of the Tacoma Community Schoolyards pilot program, which aims to renovate five parks in underserved neighborhoods. With four playgrounds completed, the program sets a precedent for similar projects in metropolitan areas.
