County Human Services screens Cooked on May 30
On May 9, Pierce County Human Services held a pivotal event at The Evergreen State College, marking Community Action Month and Older Americans Month. The gathering featured a resource fair and a screening of the impactful documentary "Cooked: Survival by Zip Code," which delves into the 1995 Chicago heatwave's deadly effects on the city's vulnerable populations. Over 120 community members participated, discussing the intersection of poverty, race, and climate disasters. A second screening is set for May 30 at Pacific Lutheran University's Anderson University Center, providing another opportunity for community engagement. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion led by experts from various sectors, focusing on proactive solutions to poverty.
Panelists will include representatives from Pierce County Human Services and the Metropolitan Development Council. The event aims to shift the narrative from disaster response to prevention strategies. Registration is necessary to reserve lunch and a seat, ensuring participation in this critical dialogue.
