County settles wrongful shooting for 3.5 million
Clark County settled a lawsuit for $3. 5 million with the family of Jenoah Donald, an unarmed black motorist shot by a deputy sheriff during a traffic stop in February 2021. Donald's family sought accountability after he was fatally shot in the head during a confrontation with law enforcement. Attorneys Mark Lindquist and Angus Lee represented the family, asserting that the settlement provides both accountability and closure. The case was poised for trial, where issues of excessive force and Clark County's policies on deadly force would have been examined.
Judge Kimberly Evanston noted the possibility that a jury could find the deputy's use of force unjustified. Prior to this settlement, Clark County had also paid $1. 25 million to another victim's family, indicating a troubling pattern of police-related fatalities. Lindquist hopes this outcome will encourage better training and policies within law enforcement. The absence of criminal charges against the deputies involved raises ongoing concerns about accountability in police conduct.
