Countys Vision Zero takes shape

Tacoma, WALocal News

The Pierce County Council approved the Vision Zero Action Plan, aiming to eliminate traffic-related deaths and serious injuries by 2035. Rooted in extensive public engagement and data analysis, the plan follows the national "Safe System" approach, which recognizes that human error is inevitable but serious injuries can be prevented. From 2018 to 2022, 108 people died and 296 sustained serious injuries on unincorporated county roads. The plan highlights crash hotspots and recommends safety improvements, including lower speed limits and better pedestrian facilities. Amber Weilert, a local resident who lost her son in a traffic incident, expressed hope that this plan will prevent similar tragedies for other families.

The council has authorized the Planning and Public Works Department to seek additional grant funding to implement the plan. Success will depend on collaboration with local, state, and federal partners, ensuring ongoing accountability and resource allocation. Ultimately, the Vision Zero Action Plan represents a critical step toward safer roads in Pierce County.
