Streets initiative failure leaves future uncertain

Tacoma, WALocal News

Tacoma voters rejected Streets Initiative 2 on April 22, stalling plans for main arterial road improvements. Public Works Director Ramiro Chavez stated that existing projects are fully funded, but future initiatives are now uncertain. The city recognized the economic challenges faced by voters, attributing the low turnout to financial anxiety. Council member Kristina Walker expressed disappointment, emphasizing that many residents desired improvements. Joe Bushnell pointed out the historical underinvestment in certain districts, where children walk on unsafe streets.

He noted that the initiative's perceived tax increase overshadowed its intent to maintain past improvements. Walker and Bushnell agreed that the failure of the initiative postpones necessary infrastructure investments. The city council will consider revised funding proposals for future voter approval.
