Farmers market vouchers available to seniors

Tacoma, WALocal News

Fewer than one-third of seniors in the U. S. consume the recommended servings of fruits and vegetables, essential for health. The Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) provides an $80 electronic benefits card to eligible seniors for purchasing fresh produce at local markets. Applicants must be Pierce County residents aged 60 and older or 55+ if American Indian or Alaska Native, with specific income limits.

Applications can be submitted online or in-person at designated Human Services locations in Tacoma. "We encourage only those committed to using the benefit by Oct. 31 to apply," emphasized Aaron Van Valkenburg, Aging and Disability Resources manager. The program aims to bolster senior nutrition while supporting local agriculture. Cards will be issued beginning June 2025, with an approval notification timeframe of 4-6 weeks.

Unused benefits hinder others on the waitlist, highlighting the importance of commitment to the program.
