Community mobilizes for Hunger Walk 2025
The Emergency Food Network's Hunger Walk took place on May 3 at Fort Steilacoom Park, gathering community members to combat food insecurity. Participants of all ages, including local Daffodil princesses, engaged in the event, which also featured live music from The Possible Solutions. EFN Executive Director Michelle Douglas thanked volunteers and stressed the urgent need for support, revealing that one in four Washington residents utilized food pantries last year. The walk marked the start of Hunger Awareness Month, which is particularly vital as summer approaches and many children lose access to school meals. Douglas indicated that 70,000 kids currently on free and reduced lunches would soon depend on food pantries.
Local churches, like Little Church on the Prairie, contributed significantly as top fundraisers, showcasing community solidarity. The event serves as a reminder of the ongoing need for food assistance in the region. Overall, the Hunger Walk exemplifies how community efforts can make a direct impact on local food security.
