Child stroke survivor celebrated nationwide
The American Stroke Association announced its annual Stroke Hero Awards, honoring seven individuals for their efforts in stroke awareness, including 12-year-old Mackenzie Childs. Childs survived a stroke in preschool and now advocates for pediatric stroke care, sharing her experience through various platforms. The awards occur each May, coinciding with American Stroke Month, to recognize the contributions of survivors and caregivers. Following her ischemic stroke, Childs underwent intensive therapy and returned to competitive dancing, winning national titles. Her family actively participates in advocacy, helping others navigate similar experiences.
Childs’ story serves as an inspiration, emphasizing that a devastating diagnosis does not have to hinder dreams. Other winners include caregivers and community groups dedicated to supporting stroke patients. The American Stroke Association aims to raise awareness and provide education throughout the year.
