Kuwait meets the U.S. in Kuwaisiana
Tacoma Arts Live's "Live at the Eleanor" series will present an acoustic performance by Kuwaisiana on May 17, featuring the alternative rock trio's unique blend of Arab identity and various rock genres. Led by Kuwaiti American frontman +Aziz, the band addresses themes of multiculturalism and identity policing through their music in both Arabic and English. +Aziz pointed out the alarming similarities between the treatment of citizens in Kuwait and the U. S. , especially with the recent revocation of nationality from nearly 42,000 Kuwaitis under authoritarian rule.
The performance will invite audience participation to craft the band's narrative, focusing on Kuwait's post-Gulf War recovery and current identity issues. This marks Kuwaisiana's first acoustic show, although they have previously performed in Tacoma. The event aims to create a deeper understanding of these social issues and foster community engagement. Kuwaisiana's diverse backgrounds in music contribute to their unique sound, bridging generational gaps among members. As they strive to unpack their Kuwaiti American identity, the band seeks to provoke thought and dialogue on significant cultural themes.
