Salishan youth mural brings healing

Tacoma, WALocal News

Tacoma's Salishan community is grappling with a spike in homicides, reaching 11 this year, as local youth express their grief through a mural project. On May 2, young artists participated in the South End Mural Project, organized by the South End Neighborhood Council, to channel their emotions into art. The initiative aims to enhance community engagement and transform the area into a vibrant greenspace. Together Tacoma, founded to mentor youth, plays a crucial role in facilitating this creative expression. Nora Flemming de Sandoval, Executive Director of Safe Streets, highlighted the project's focus on mental and emotional well-being.

The Health is Wealth program, which began in 2023, accommodates youth of all ages and emphasizes financial literacy, wellness, and civic engagement. Kids aged 4 to 17 come together weekly, fostering a supportive environment for discussing their thoughts and experiences. As the Salishan community continues to heal, such initiatives provide vital outlets for processing grief and building resilience.
