County completes broadband project

Tacoma, WALocal News

Pierce County and Comcast completed a fiber-rich broadband network in Key Peninsula, connecting 600 homes and businesses ahead of schedule. Originally set for completion in late spring, the project cost around $5 million, with $3. 75 million funded through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. Council member Robyn Denson highlighted the internet's role as essential infrastructure for equitable access to services like education, healthcare, and job opportunities. Comcast will soon expand its services to Thun Field, enhancing connectivity in the region.

The Internet Essentials program will allow low-income families to access affordable internet, having already connected over 500,000 low-income Washingtonians. Comcast's NOW Wi-Fi plan, starting at $30 per month, includes no annual contracts and provides reliable service. This expansion is part of a broader initiative to enhance broadband access in rural communities. The project reflects a growing commitment to ensuring all residents have access to essential online resources.
