Streets initiative failure leaves future uncertains

Tacoma, WALocal News

Tacoma voters rejected Streets Initiative 2 on April 22, jeopardizing future infrastructure projects aimed at improving main arterials. Public Works Director Ramiro Chavez noted that the city’s adopted budget did not anticipate revenues from the initiative, leaving future projects uncertain. The city acknowledged economic pressures faced by voters, which contributed to the low turnout and defeat of the measure. Council member Kristina Walker expressed disappointment, highlighting the initiative's potential to enhance the community's quality of life. Joe Bushnell pointed out the pressing need for infrastructure improvements in his district, particularly for schools and pedestrian safety.

The failure of the initiative means Tacoma will face increased costs for infrastructure needs over time. Chavez stated that the city council will actively explore alternative funding options moving forward. The possibility of revising and resubmitting a funding measure to voters remains on the table for future consideration.
