Rescue Mission to expand mens shelter

Tacoma, WALocal News

Tacoma City Council approved a $3. 5 million agreement for the Tacoma Rescue Mission on April 8, completing funding for a $21 million expansion of its men’s shelter. The expansion aims to double the shelter's capacity and improve facilities for those experiencing homelessness, including veterans. Duke Paulson, the Mission's Executive Director, emphasized the importance of this funding to leverage additional state, county, and federal support. The shelter currently serves more individuals than its original capacity of 60, reaching up to 120 during colder months.

The expansion will add 100 congregate shelter beds, addressing a critical need identified in Pierce County's Comprehensive Plan to End Homelessness. Improvements will also include modernized shower facilities to provide a more dignified experience for guests. Additionally, the bedding system will shift to a step-up bed system, enhancing accessibility for seniors and those with mobility issues. Overall, this project signifies a crucial step in addressing homelessness and enhancing community support services.
