Tacoma, WALocal News

The Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County launched S. P. O. T. , a mobile veterinary unit, on April 21 to improve animal care accessibility.

This 26-foot vehicle addresses rising demand for veterinary services, limited shelter space, and community cat overpopulation. Equipped with a surgical suite and recovery areas, S. P. O. T.

will provide spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, microchipping, and mobile adoption events. Director of Marketing Lauren Green noted that the vehicle was meticulously designed over the past year to meet community needs. The shelter's partnership with the City of Tacoma, effective April 1, reinforces the city's commitment to animal welfare and resource allocation for at-risk pets. Green highlighted the challenges facing shelters, including veterinary staffing shortages expected to continue through 2035. Through heat-mapping, S.

P. O. T. will target areas with high community cat populations to measure the impact of its services. This initiative aims to reduce transportation barriers and bring essential veterinary care directly to underserved communities.
