County residents urged to prepare for burn ban

Tacoma, WALocal News

The Pierce County Council announced that an annual burn ban will take effect at 8 a. m. on June 1, impacting unincorporated Pierce County. This Stage 1 burn ban prohibits land clearing and burning of yard debris while allowing barbecues and small recreational fires in designated fire pits. Fire Marshal Ken Rice stated that the advance notice aims to reduce frustration caused by previous short notices.

In 2024, the burn ban spanned from June 1 to September 20, with this year’s duration dependent on fire risk conditions. The ban is implemented in anticipation of increasing fire risks as summer approaches. Residents of incorporated areas are advised to check their local regulations for specific burn rules. Alternatives to burning yard debris include home composting and utilizing transfer stations. The Pierce County Fire Prevention Bureau provides additional information on their website.
