Tacoma, WALocal News

The Tacoma-Kitakyushu Children’s Day Festival is poised to bring a unique cultural experience to Tacoma on April 26, running from 10 a. m. to 3 p. m. at the Point Defiance Pagoda.

Organized by the Tacoma-Kitakyushu Sister City Committee, this free event celebrates "Kodomo no Hi," a Japanese holiday that honors the health and happiness of children. Attendees can engage in traditional games and crafts, such as making kabuto paper helmets, folding origami, and testing their skills at yo-yo fishing. The festival is bolstered by partnerships with local organizations like the Consulate General of Japan in Seattle and Tacoma Public Library, which will provide cultural experiences and activities. A standout feature will be a noon performance by Yume Daiko, showcasing the powerful rhythms of Japanese taiko drumming. Kitakyushu Sister City Committee Chair Mira Utz expressed enthusiasm about the festival's potential, noting it could evolve into an annual celebration.

The festival promises a vibrant atmosphere, encouraging community participation and cultural exchange. With social media engagement opportunities, attendees can win prizes while deepening their connection to Japanese culture.
