Vision Zero action plan makes debut
Unincorporated areas of Pierce County reported 108 fatal crashes and 296 serious injuries between 2018 and 2022, prompting the urgent adoption of a Vision Zero Action Plan. On August 30, 2022, the Pierce County Council endorsed the plan, aiming to eradicate traffic fatalities and serious injuries on county-owned roads by 2035. This proactive initiative is modeled after successful Vision Zero efforts in Europe and several major U. S. cities, emphasizing that traffic "accidents" can indeed be prevented.
The plan employs a Safe System Approach, which acknowledges that human error is inevitable and focuses on creating roadway designs that minimize severe injuries and fatalities. Extensive public outreach and engagement with stakeholders, including the Puyallup Tribe of Indians and local law enforcement, were integral to the plan's development. By aligning with Washington state's Target Zero Plan and the Puget Sound Regional Council’s Regional Safety Action Plan, the Vision Zero initiative ensures a comprehensive and cohesive strategy. The plan aims to utilize engineering, enforcement, education, and data analysis to identify and address the root causes of traffic incidents. Ultimately, it emphasizes shared responsibility among all road users, fostering a safer transportation environment.
