On April 1, the Pierce County Council unanimously confirmed Robin Vasquez as the Director of the Human Resources Department, with a decisive 6-0 vote. This pivotal confirmation marks the first major appointment in County Executive Ryan Mello’s newly inaugurated administration, signaling the start of a series of confirmation hearings planned for spring and summer. Council Chair Jani Hitchen expressed confidence in Vasquez, noting her extensive experience and her approach to collective bargaining agreements as vital for improving communication between the Human Resources Department and the Council. The Human Resources Department, governed by the Pierce County Code, is responsible for a myriad of personnel functions, including overseeing the Civil Service Commission and the Salary Commission for Elected Officials. Vasquez’s confirmation comes after a favorable committee hearing on March 24, where her qualifications were thoroughly evaluated.

Additionally, the council is scheduled to discuss Julie Demuth’s appointment as Acting Director of Finance at their meeting on April 8. This meeting will allow for remote participation, ensuring broader community engagement. The council's actions reflect a commitment to effective governance and transparency in the administration's early days.
