Tacoma fire chief officially sworn in

Sionna Stallings-Ala’ilima was sworn in as Tacoma's official fire chief on April 1, making history as the first Samoan American and the second woman to hold this esteemed position. The ceremony was a heartfelt celebration attended by family, friends, and community members, including former Chief Toryono Green, who mentored her during her career. City Manager Elizabeth Pauli commended Stallings-Ala’ilima for her warmth and technical expertise, emphasizing the positive impact of Chief Green's leadership in nurturing her talent. After taking the oath, Stallings-Ala’ilima expressed profound gratitude to her family and community, promising to uphold their trust in her leadership. Lua Pritchard, Executive Director of the Asia Pacific Cultural Center, spoke on behalf of the Pacific Islander community, underscoring the importance of her appointment.

She reminded Stallings-Ala’ilima to honor her cultural roots as she navigates her new responsibilities. To commemorate this significant milestone, Stallings-Ala’ilima invited her family to perform a Haka dance, enriching the ceremony with their cultural heritage. This event not only marks a personal achievement for Stallings-Ala’ilima but also serves as a beacon of representation and pride for the Tacoma community.
